N900 can show virtual keyboard and it can be replaced by plugin app, like him-scim. So if you'd like to use the plugin, you need to enable the virtual keyboard setting. You can change it as follow.

2. virtual keyboard (him-scim) won't be shown when hardware keyboard is opened.
You can display him-scim GUI when you tap on something input GUI, such as text box etc, but you need to close hardware keyboard to do it.

3. need to set GTK_IM_MODULE=scim
To use scim, need to set GTK_IM_MODULE=scim. So him-scim just set the environment and connect to scim daemon, but it is temporary so other app cannot use it directly. If you set the environment on terminal and launch GTK app (not Qt), you can use scim directly.

4. it is better to install Chinese dictionary to /opt/maemocjk
him-scim uses anthy, Japanese dictionary, and I have modified some packages to install under /opt/maemocjk, so if you want to install Chinese dictionary, you need to modify the package also, because N900's root partition is very small as you know.

There is scim-pinyin-0.5.91-maemo etc, but I have not modified the package setting and tested. If you can help it, please join maemocjk project and update them.
